The CMS just finished conducting the latest edition of the Canada Lynx Mathematics Competition (CLMC) for high school students. About 3000 students participated this year and ten students scored full marks in this multiple choice contest. Full results, as well as this year’s problems and solutions, are available at https://clmc.math.ca/
Here’s one example problem that stands out for its deceptively simple formulation and the surprising depth of its solution:
It’s a clever algebraic invariant transforms the grid into an optimization problem involving the AM–GM inequality and number theory. It rewards precisely the kind of mathematical ingenuity that professors appreciate—recognizing hidden structure, exploiting symmetry, and combining elementary ideas to solve a decidedly non-elementary problem.
