As teachers and educators, we have had to adapt to changes in student behaviour, capacity, and interest, as well as to advancements in technology, changes in work life, and indeed, quite general and broad changes in culture.

From teaching in schools and universities to preparing the next generation of teachers, mathematics education operates at multiple levels. In this meeting, we invite teachers and educators from these three levels to contribute to the debates and discussions on three key issues. Particularly, speakers will bring their perspectives on how they tackle both the potential and the challenges presented by recent changes in the field. If we need to rethink and revise our objectives, what modifications should we consider? If new practices are necessary, what are they, and how could they be implemented? Lastly, if we remain open to possibilities for intelligent and imaginative inquiry regarding these three issues, what aspects have we overlooked or overemphasized?

DEBATE 1 – On the Design of Service Courses in Undergraduate Mathematics

In our mathematics service courses, such as calculus, we are teaching the wrong things.

DEBATERS

Chantal Buteau, Brock University

Becca Carter, Queen’s University

Miroslav Lovric, McMaster University

Chester Weatherby, Wilfrid Laurier University

DEBATE 2 – On Realizing the Vision of the High School Mathematics Curriculum

In the past decade, the gap between the stated vision of the high school math curriculum and its actual achievements has widened.

DEBATERS

Paul Alves, OAME

Ann Arden, OCDSB

Roger Logan, HWDSB

Nick Nielsen, TDSB

DEBATE 3 – On the Mathematical Preparation of Future Teachers

When math content knowledge is secured, pedagogy follows.

DEBATERS

Shannon Ezzat, Cape Breton University

Jennifer Holm, Wilfrid Laurier University

Jean-Francois Maheux, Université du Québec à Montréal

Christine Suurtamm, University of Ottawa

To view the full program http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/activities/24-25/meforum-Apr

Registration is free through this link: https://portal.fields.utoronto.ca/personal-portal/participation/3166

The MathEd Forum, hosted by the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, is a community dedicated to discussing and enhancing mathematics education at all levels.
