NEW: The CMS Welcomes Dr. Ilia Binder as Interim President

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) warmly welcomes Dr. Ilia Binder (University of Toronto) as its Interim President. Dr. Binder earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1997. Over the course of his career, he has held positions at several institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IPAM, and Yale University, before joining the University of Toronto in 2009. Since 2021, he has served as Chair of the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Binder’s research focuses on the application of the methods of the Geometric Function Theory to problems in Statistical Physics, the Theory of Probability, the Theory of Computational Complexity, and Dynamical Systems. He has published an extensive list of research papers and has received numerous research awards, including the Bohnenblust Travel Prize (Caltech), the Clark and Cooke grants (Harvard), the Connaught New Faculty Matching Grant (2006), the Project Fund for North America from the Senter for internasjonalisering av utdanning (SIU, Norway, 2016-2018), and the NSERC Discovery Grant (2009-2019).

Dr. Binder has contributed to the CMS in many capacities. He has served as Vice-President (Ontario) since 2023 and previously served on the Endowment Grants Committee. He has also been involved with the International Affairs and International Prize Committees. In addition, he has been participating in CMS Meetings as both an organizer and speaker since 2006.

The CMS is pleased to continue working with Dr. Binder and extends its best wishes as he begins his term as Interim President.
