Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is proud to announce the achievements of Math Team Canada at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held from July 10th to 20th, on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Competing against 630 of the world’s best high school mathematicians, the Canadian team delivered exceptional performances and is bringing home two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal:

• Warren Bei (Rockridge Secondary School), Gold Medal (with a perfect score of 42/42!)
• Ming Yang (Brophy College Preparatory), Gold Medal
• Leo Wu (Bayview Secondary School), Silver Medal
• Ryan Bai (Canyon Crest Academy), Silver Medal
• Tiger Li (Milliken Mills High School), Bronze Medal
• Zhekai Shen (Elite Preparatory Academy)

Congratulations to all 6 team members!

Warren Bei’s perfect score marks only the sixth time a Canadian has achieved this feat in Canada’s 45 years of participation at the IMO. With an impressive record of three gold and two silver medals, Warren now ranks second in Canada’s IMO hall of fame and is tied for ninth overall in the global IMO hall of fame. The CMS extends its heartfelt thanks to Warren for his exceptional representation of Canadian mathematics in recent years and looks forward to seeing where his post-secondary journey leads him.

Led by Victor Rong (University of Toronto), Eric Shen (Harvard University) and Howard Halim (Modal Labs), Math Team Canada competed in a rigorous two-day exam featuring six challenging problems, each day lasting 4.5 hours.

Celebrating the team’s accomplishments, Dr. James Rickards (Saint Mary’s University), Chair of the IMO Committee of the CMS, shares his congratulations: 

“Congratulations to the Canadian team for their excellent results on the 2025 IMO! Extra commendations go to Warren Bei, who achieved a perfect score. This is only the sixth perfect score by a Canadian in the 45 years that Canada has participated in the IMO. It also marks the end of Warren’s illustrious IMO career, where he earned 3 gold and 2 silver medals. This resume puts him in a tie for 9th place in the IMO hall of fame. Congratulations again!”

This year again, prior to the competition, team members attended a training camp at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) in Banff, Alberta. The CMS gratefully acknowledges the mentors and trainers who guided Math Team Canada’s preparation and success, including Howard Halim (Modal Labs), Emily Ma (Harvard University), Victor Rong (University of Toronto), Eric Shen (Harvard University), Ben Yang, and Miranda Zhao (MIT).

The CMS extends heartfelt thanks to Jane Street for their generous and continued support of Math Team Canada. Their commitment plays a vital role in nurturing young Canadian talent on the international stage.

About the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship high school mathematics competition. The IMO began in 1959 in Romania with seven participating countries. Math Team Canada competed against the world’s best students from over 100 countries in the 66th IMO. Canada has earned 44 gold, 73 silver, 98 bronze medals, and 21 honourable mentions since first competing in 1981.
