The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is seeking volunteers with expertise in mathematics to assist as markers for the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC).

As interest in this prestigious competition continues to grow, the CMS invites active or retired math professors and mathematicians to contribute their expertise and time to inspire the next generation of mathematical talent in Canada and globally. We aim to establish a pool of qualified volunteers who can provide additional support if the current group of markers requires assistance.

Volunteers will be able to work remotely using the Crowdmark platform and determine when and how much they are willing to do (typically between 10 and 30 hours of work in total), supported by the help of a group coordinator and a detailed marking guide. This marking effort takes place during the month of November.

The COMC, an annual mathematics competition hosted by the Canadian Mathematical Society, is a distinguished platform for young problem solvers worldwide. It not only nurtures mathematical talent but also fosters critical thinking and innovation. The COMC also serves as the gateway to the CMS’s training camps and offers the opportunity to represent Canada in international mathematics competitions as part of Math Team Canada.

Volunteer markers are essential to the success of the COMC, ensuring accurate and fair evaluation of participants’ solutions. Their expertise helps uphold the high standards of the competition, encouraging excellence and growth among students.

Active or retired math professors and mathematicians interested in volunteering as expert markers for the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge are asked to please contact Termeh Kousha at tkousha@cms.math.ca
