The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) invites proposals for its 2027 scientific program, designed to facilitate collaboration and advance research across mathematical sciences.

The submission deadline for 5-day workshop proposals is Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

In 2027, BIRS will host a 48-week program at its main facility in Banff, Alberta. Additional workshops will take place across its affiliated international centres:

15 5-day half-workshops (max. 20 participants) at Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO), Mexico

12 5-day full workshops at the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM), Hangzhou, China

5 5-day full workshops at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Granada (IMAG), Spain

10 5-day full workshops at the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), India

BIRS provides an environment for deep, collaborative research and the exchange of ideas across disciplines. Its programs support frontier research in mathematics, statistics, and theoretical computer science, while also building connections to related fields and sectors. BIRS and its partner institutes provide full accommodation, meals, and on-site research facilities at no cost to invited participants.

Proposed workshops should engage a broad range of mathematical communities and foster meaningful collaboration across disciplines, regions, and career stages. Organizing teams and participant lists should reflect a range of perspectives — including research area, geographic distribution, career level and type of institution.

In addition to 5-day workshops, BIRS supports a wide range of other research and training activities, including Summer Schools, Hybrid Thematic Programs, BIRS Now! events, Focused Research Groups, Research in Teams, 2-day workshops, and PIMS–BIRS Team Up! initiatives. Full descriptions of these formats are available at:
https://www.birs.ca/programs/general-program-descriptions.

Proposal submission guidelines can be found here:
https://proposals.birs.ca/guidelines.

Proposals for non-standard formats (e.g., Research in Teams, Summer Schools) may be submitted year-round, but must be received at least five months before the requested start date.

Additionally, proposals are being accepted for a tandem workshop to be held simultaneously at MATRIX (Australia) and BIRS (Banff) during the week of November 22–27, 2026. The application deadline for the tandem workshop is September 1, 2025. For full details, visit:
https://www.birs.ca/announcements/2025-06-01/BIRS-MATRIX-Tandem-2026.

All proposals must be submitted through the BIRS online portal:
https://proposals.birs.ca.

We look forward to receiving your proposals and to supporting discovery, collaboration, and global exchange in the mathematical sciences.

Sincerely,
Malabika Pramanik
Director, BIRS
